The fountain was highly controversial at the time it was unveiled. A motion to the city council held the following comment: “People have long been annoyed over this most peculiar work of art/…/and find themselves increasingly unable to come to terms with the fountain.”
Carl Eldh’s concept was for the piece to represent “a bright idyll” and apparently he felt much misunderstood and saddened that the sculpture was not appreciated.
