On 11 September 1297 Scottish forces led by William Wallace and Andrew Moray decisively defeated the forces of English King Edward I "Longshanks" under the command of John de Warenne, 6th Earl of Surrey, and Hugh de Cressingham during the First War of Scottish Independence.
