Ethiopia / Amhara / Lalibela
place with historical importance, UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, cave church/monastery, Orthodox church

Bete Giorgis, meaning the "House of St. George" is one of the finest 12th century monolithic rock-hewn churches of Lalibela: A single solid block of granite rock excavated and detached from the surrounding massive stone, and carved with precision in the shape of cross.

The structure measures 22 X 12 meters (72.2 X 39.4) feet, and the roof of the church is at ground level. Except for the Bete Giorgis, which is standing by itself, west of the stream named "River Jordan", all of Lalibela's rock-hewn churches lie in groups.
