The Ridderzaal (English: Hall of Knights) was built in the 13th century. Every year, on the third Tuesday in September, Her Majesty the Queen delivers the so-called “Speech from the Throne” to the joint sitting of both chambers of parliament. The members of the cabinet, members of the diplomatic corps and other dignitaries are also present at this state ceremony. In her speech, the Queen outlines government plans for the forthcoming parliamentary session and announces bills to be considered by parliament.
