The infrasound array station IS44 near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is part of the International Monitoring System (IMS) for detecting nuclear test explosions. The sensor array is triangular with central element H1 and corner elements H2-H4, all of which transmit their outputs to a nearby Central Recording Facility which in turn sends the data to the International Data Centre in Vienna, Austria. The station detects natural as well as artificial sources of infrasound and is well positioned to monitor the frequent volcanic activity on the Kamchatka peninsula and Kuril Islands. IS44 is located near two other IMS stations: primary seismic station PS36 and radionuclide station RN60.
