Zangilan District (Azerbaijani: Zəngilan; Armenian: Կովսական, Kurdish: Zengilan‎) is one of the 66 districts of Azerbaijan.
It is located in the south-west of the country and belongs to the East Zangezur Economic Region.
The district borders the districts of Qubadli, Jabrayil, the Syunik Province of Armenia and the East Azerbaijan Province of Iran.
Its capital and largest city is Zangilan.
As of 2020, the district had a nominal population of 45,200.

Geography.
Territory of Zangilan Rayon geographically corresponds to Kovsakan Gavar (district) of Syunik Ashkhar (province) of Historical Armenia.

History.
In 1603 Armenian population was deported to Ispahan city by Persian Shah Abbas the 1-st. In 1918-20 period the district became an apple of discord between Democratic Republic of Armenia and Azerbaijani Republic. In 1920-1936 it was included in Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic. In 1936-1991 was part of Azerbaijani SSR. In 1991-1993 period was administrated as territorial entity in the south-western part of the Republic of Azerbaijan. On October 29, 1993 felt under control of Army of Liberation of the Republic of Artsakh, during the Nagorno-Karabakh War. Since then, it has been governed by the unrecognized Republic of Artsakh as part of its Qashatagh Province (Armenian: Քաշաթաղի Մարզ). In 1993-2020 period it was settled by Armenian refugees from Azerbaijani SSR.
On October 20-22, 2020, Azerbaijan took full control over the district.

Name origin.
The Turkish name "Zangilan" originates from the word "Zangahan" which in Armenian for "ringing". According to belief in Tamerlan invasion period Armenian fortresses of Syunik region notified each others on approaching enemy by ringing the bells. In Armenian kingdom period there was a fortress of Grham that was first to notice hordes crossing Eraskh (Araxes) river and rings of numerous bells was re-vibed over the valley, named since then Zahgahan.
