Estate home designed c. 1910 in the Tudor style by Howard Greenley on originally 130 acres of land for Charles Albert Coffin {industrialist, attorney, capitalist}. Coffin served as a founder, president, and chairman of the board of General Electric Co. He also served as a director of Union Carbide Corp., Carbon Corp., Electrical Securities Corp., International General Electric Light & Power Securities Co., and United Electric Securities Co. Additionally, he served as a trustee of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY.

The estate was inherited by his daughter, Alice Coffin, who continued to call it "Portledge". When she died, part of the estate became the North Shore Bird and Game Sanctuary. The balance of the land--along with the main home and outbuildings--are now used by the Portledge School.
