This is just part of the bird sanctuary, which actually extends all along Salmon Arm Bay. Christmas Island as it's called (named after a person who was very involved in saving the foreshore and developing the sanctuary) was built with material dredged up at the nearby boat harbour, and yes, unfortunately the government rules at the time specified that the fill had to be placed in such an artificial rectangular shape. But at least the surface has been contoured with hills and hollows, and it is well used by many bird species. |
