The small tract of water where one of the most important naval battles in human history, the Battle of Salamis, was decided. The vastly superior Persian navy was defeated by the allied Greek naval forces in September of 480 BC, forcing Xerxes to give up his bid for conquest of Greece and turning the tide which eventually led to withdrawal of all Persian forces.
