Financial Times Building (New York City, New York)

office building, skyscraper, International style architecture

496-foot, 40-story International-style office building completed in 1965. Designed by Emery Roth & Sons, it was originally built for ABC. It became ITT's headquarters after the conglomerate bought the network, and is now the U.S. base of the British business paper The Financial Times. It is clad in a curtain wall of grey steel and glass.

The tower is set back behind a small plaza on all three sides with wide, low sets of black stone steps (two sets at the northwest corner, where the building is set back farther). The 2-story base has stone piers with bays of plate-glass slightly recessed between the. The two north bays on the west facade contain the main entrances, both with glass revolving doors, and a small stainless-steel canopy. The six south bays project farther out, lined with storefronts, and begin a wing of the building that sets back above the 13th floor.

The south facade on 53rd Street has four bays, all of which set back above the 13th floor to the main tower slab. The east bay has an entrance/exit to the underground parking garage. The north facade on 54th has three bays, with a smaller single-entry ramp to the parking garage at the east, next to a long set of stairs leading up to a metal service door. There is another bay at the ground floor with a freight entrance and a chiller unit atop the ground floor. Behind it rises the building core that extends from the east facade, close to the north end. The core is clad in pre-cast concrete and runs the height of the tower to the roof line.

There are mechanical floors at the 14th and top two levels, with metal vents in place of windows. The top of the building features FT logos in the same pinkish-orange color that the paper is printed on. Besides the lobby, the ground floor is occupied by Knoll Home Design showroom, an Apple Bank for Savings branch, a Starbucks coffee, and an AT&T Wireless store.
