roundabout / traffic circle, interesting place
Tonge House, Royal Circus, was a private Edwardian house until bequeathed, 1929, by the late Bertha Portal, as a "Home for Ladies". Royal Circus was originally planned as a grand circle of large villas. Although villas were built at the bottom of York Hill many of these were destroyed by a bomb in WWII. The surviving development is Tonge House at the centre surrounded by semi-detached housing mainly from the inter-war years.
