National Petrochemical Co., a subsidiary of Iran’s petrochemical giant NPC International, has infused $100 million for the reoperation of Bataan Polyethylene Corp. (BPC) after buying out 60 percent stake of the NPC Alliance Corp. of the Gatchalian-owned firm Metro Alliance Holdings and Equities. BPC was previously owned and operated by a consortium of British Petroleum of the United Kingdom, Petronas of Malaysia and Sumitomo of Japan and local investors.

BPC owns a 275,000 ton/year linear low-density polyethylene (lldPE)/high-density polyethylene (hdPE) swing plant. The plant ran aground in August 2002 or just a year after since the plant started commercial operation on February 1, 2001. The entry of NPC in BPC was taken as a very positive development by the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) which was given the mandate by Malacañang to resuscitate the country’s flagging petrochemical industry.
