This Art Deco theatre is famed for its well preserved lavish interior decorations. Currently the home of the Oakland East Bay Symphony and the Oakland Ballet, it also hosts concerts by pop stars and orchestras. Single night showings of classical movies from Hollywood's Golden Era are occasionally shown. For $5, one gets to listen to 30 minutes of the musical stylings of Jerry Nagano at the Mighty Wurlitzer organ, participate in the Dec-O-Win raffle, a cartoon, newsreel, and old previews -- all before the movie starts.

The Paramount, which opened on December 16, 1931, is the most ambitious theatre design of architect Timothy L. Pflueger. Restored in 1973, it has retained an exceptional unity of style. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as # 73000395 and is California Historical Landmark No. 884.
