The white line extending into the water represents the remaining spur of the former alignment of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. The old bridge was destroyed in 1980 when the SS Summit Venture collided with one of its support piers during a storm.
The remaining approaches to the old cantilever bridge remain in use as Skyway Fishing Pier State Park.
