HISTORICAL CEMETERY #: PO016 UNION CEMETERY PORTSMOUTH RI
east of East Main Road at TEL pole # 695
1000 burials
100 ft x 1000 ft in good condition enclosed with a stone wall; sign ???
NOTE: Town Hall information says this cemetery was started by the Portsmouth Christian Union Church (the building is now the museum of the Portsmouth Historical Society) at the corner of East Main Road and Union Avenue. The tiny pamphlet "By-Laws of the Union Cemetery, Portsmouth, R.I." dates the actual incorporation of the cemetery to May 1897, though clearly many burials had previously taken place there. Many interesting Victorian stones and several elaborate cast metal markers.
