"Erchless" (Old Westbury, New York)

Estate home designed c. 1935 in the Colonial Revival by Adams & Prentice on originally 123 acres of land for Howard Phipps, Sr {capitalist}. Phipps was the son of Henry Phipps, Jr. who resided at "Bonnie Blink" in Lake Success. His brother, John S. Phipps" resided at "Westbury House" next door in Old Westbury. The estate was built on a former Quaker farm and used its farmhouses as an outbuilding complex. It also had formal landscaping designed by Innocenti & Webel. Pronounced "airchless".

The estate was subsequently inherited by Howard Phipps, Jr {financier} who served as a trustee of Bessemer Securities Corporation. "Erchless" is among the last Gold Coast estates still owned by its original family, occupied by only descendants. It was sold in 2019 to a developer who plans to subdivide the estate.

  • Erchless is now for sale. If you have an extra $30 Million lying around you might want to make an investment! Only $750k per year for taxes! Sad that the great Old Westbury Phipps properties are being sold off. This is a classic property, but recently a property on Hasting Road was sold, Spring Hill of course was majestic Phipps land, and the beautiful Knole Estate is also for sale. I really hope Erchless doesn't turn into a new Old Westbury development of new homes and ruined history.
