The U’mista Cultural Center, about 2 km west of the ferry terminal, houses the art and artifacts of the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nations people. The center displays a rare historic collection of potlatch masks and regalia returned to the community decades after being confiscated by the government at a time when potlatching was illegal.

In 1922, the Potlatch Collection of regalia - masks and ceremonial objects - was confiscated by the government and placed in the hands of museums in Canada, the USA and UK. After years of effort, many of these treasures were successfully repatriated to their rightful owners and are now housed in the U'mista Cultural Centre.
