The Skeppsbro Row houses where planned as private residences but with a storage as well. The owners where all wealthy merchants active in the Swedish foregin trade at the time.

The Houses are all displaying their most impressive side towards the water front, as the King Gustav II Adolf wanted it to be. The comming great power, Sweden, wanted to give an impressive first apperance to ships arriving from abroad. Skeppsbron was also during this time the foremost walking area during Sundays for the people of Stockholm, an important place to display its own wealth but also to make new acquaintance.

The merchantmen that owned the houses at the Skeppsborn was sometimes also called the Skeppsbro Nobility because of their influence and wealth. It was first at the 19:th century that Skeppsbron started to lose its important for the foregin trade when the new ports Stadsgården Stadsgården, Värtan and Loudden was built.

Today Skeppsbron is once again a busy place with large cruise ships berths there all around the year.
