archaeological site, ancient ruins

The ruined site of Roman Scolacium (in Greek, Skylletion) is at the archaeological park south of Roccelletta, near the coast. The excavated remains include a theater, amphitheater, temple, and a later Norman church. The settlement was founded by the ancient Greeks long before becoming a Roman town. It was abandoned some time after the 7th century in favor of the more inland site of Squillace, better protected from raids by sea.
