University Centre (Glasgow)

university, gym / gymnasium - sports

Something of a misnomer as it is neither the "centre" of Strathclyde University (in fact it is the westernmost building in the campus), nor is it very important. Built in 1975, originally it housed the Sports Centre, the Staff Club, and the Student Refectory. Trouble was by the year 2000, neither of the latter two institutions were being used by their respective audiences, but both were making use of the Sports Centre, which was now woefully inadequate for a university of 13,000 students. So the refectory was closed (only ever coming out of retirement twice a year for use as an exam hall), and the Staff Club shrunk down to virtually nothing to make room for an expanded cardio suite.

Following the opening of the new Sports Centre in 2017, the building is now practically redundant, apart from its aforementioned use as an exam venue, but not much else. It is likely that the building will eventually be disposed of and probably demolished, as the university continues its long term strategy to vacate much of the western fringe of the campus.
