Ait Yahya resistance to penetration of colonial troops was incredible. Led by Imhiouach marabout, Sidi el Mekki (which a cartridge from her magic rifle came the hour of delivery), the last survivors of dissidents taking Tounfit formed a powerful harka nearly 1,000 fighters determined to fight and organized their defense on the western flank of Jebel Tazigzaout. They held three weeks against tens of thousands of soldiers and "supporters" (their traditional enemies, the people of the plains) and despite the artillery fire, machine guns and bombing raids, they opposed a fierce resistance. It was the hardest fighting of the Atlas and it is with knives and grenades they were dislodged one at a manhole they were located under the roots of the cedars . Their resistance was heroic but futile. On 13 September 1932, Sidi El Mekki finally surrendered with women and children during the fighting had taken refuge in caves above. It is now a sacred place.
