Cherthala is a beautiful coastal town, with its eastern borders embracing the serene
backwaters of Lake Vembanad. It has the best white silica sand in Asia, similar to that found in Hawaii. One can enjoy the backwaters riding an eco friendly house boat. The Muttom Church that has a history of about 1000 years, the Arthinkal pilgrim's sanctuary built by the Portuguese and the Devi Temple at Cherthala town are some of the landmarks. Cherthala is famous for hi-tech designer Coir mats.
St. Thomas, one among the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ reached Cherthala and established a church in Kokkothamangalam here. Not many people know that Itti Achyuthan Vaidyar of Thaickal here has originally prepared the legendary botanical bible "Hortus Malabaricus" (published in 1678) for Hendrik Adriaan van Rheede, the Dutch governor of the former princely state of Cochin between 1670 and 1677.
