Named for the original owner, Phil "Babe" Brandelli, a prize fighter in the 1930s. This neighborhood beer bar had a real Charles Bukowski sort of ambience about it, which helped give Old Venice it's distinctively funky charactor. After being in the Brandelli family for nearly fifty years, the Brig was sold to David Paris in 1997.

The outdoor mural on the south side of the building, a picture-within-a-picture, is a portrait of "Babe" with his wife Betty, painted in 1973 by Art Mortimer. Mortimer has a part time teaching gig in the art department at LMU, but doing murals is really his day job. He gets a lot of commissions doing the sides of buildings all over California.

  • I was watching No Retreat and decided to Google Brandelli's and stumbled across this. Seems to be quite a famous little spot. Ps No Retreat, No Surrender 's still an iconic movie !!
