The cave is sacred to Jews, Christians, Muslims, and Druze, all of whom venerate the prophet Elijah. There was a mosque here until 1948.This natural cave is a long single hall (14 x 8 x 5M), with small cavities in its eastern and northern sides. Around the entrance to the cave are several buildings, built 120 years ago, which served as a hostel.A domed chapel enshrines the cave, which is underneath the main altar. The cave itself also has a small altar. Pilgrimages and great ceremonies are held at this cave many times each year.

Head coverings must be worn in the cave; they are available at the entrance.
