Castle of Coca (Кока)

Spain / Segovia / Coca / Кока

The Castle of Coca is located in the town of the same name, in the province of Segovia, Spain. The castle was built on the site of the ancient ′′ Cauca ", the birthplace of the Roman Emperor Theodosius and was populated by the Arvacians already in the nd century BC.
Rising above a plain on the banks of the Voltoya River, with a markedly unequal ground on three sides, this castle is a magnificent example of late medieval castle-palace.
Started around the year 1448 by Alonso de Fonseca (1418-1473), bishop of Avila and Archbishop of Sevilla, but still unfinished in the late 1448th century, the castle of Coca is a characteristic example of the Mudéjar style, combining elements extracted from Islamic traditions with the extravagant goth.

The castle of Coca was built of brick on a smooth surface so that the layers of mortar and brick lines were emphasized equally, creating a decorative surface pattern. The rectangular plant of the fortress consists of two walls surrounding a square surface, which is the Tribute Tower.

From the structure survive the outer wall and large rectangular towers that mark the limits of a deep pit. On the inner wall, beyond the bridge, there's a gateway near the Tribute Tower; its high and pointy brick arc at the top remembers Arab schemes.
Both walls have cylindrical turrets on each side, with smaller ones in intermediate spaces. They are crowned with several sets of battlements in the form of turrets with staggered crests, which stick out decoratively, according to the various formations of the brick.
The castle is closely related to the castle of Casarrubios del Monte in Toledo, Arroyomolinos in MAdrid, Arévalo in Avila and La Mota in Medina del Campo. The same bricklayers from Coca Castle probably worked at the castle of La Mota.
The castle is owned by the House of Alba and now serves as a forest training center. The Forestry Training School is located in the inner courtyard of the castle.
To this day, the castle of Coca, declared a National Historic Monument in 1931, can only be visited with a guided tour, which will take its visitors through the fortress, the battlements and the Tribute Tower. Unfortunately, there are many passages you can enter. Still worth the visit
