For many years it was the George Hotel, a beautiful Victorian era building, and once one of the city's most lavish hotels. The final owner (the infamous Peter Fox) became a local legend in his own lifetime in his attempts to resist the winds of change as the Concert Hall and Buchanan Galleries mercilessly went up around his decaying establishment. It was only a matter of time before hungry property developers (and Glasgow City Council) got their way and the building closed in 1997 - netting him £30million in the process. All that remains of the old building is the Grade A-listed façade, the rest is brand new.

The building has never been far away from drama in its recent history, appearing in Trainspotting and Taggart, and following its reopening in 2000, Richard Branson abseiled down the side of it to open the new Virgin Megastore record shop that was built within.
