Built in 1901 to designs by Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer, it was donated by Standard Oil Executive and Spring Lake summer resident Martin Maloney of Scranton, PA. It was built in memory of Maloney's daughter Catharine, who died of tuberculosis in 1900 at the age of 17. It is the principal church of the St. Margaret-St. Catharine Parish of Spring Lake, Spring Lake Heights, South Belmar, and Wall Township.
