Second World War 1939-1945, war memorial
Monument to the Soviet victory, built by the Red Army in 1945. A similar monument was built at the same time in Berlin, which was also divided among the four Allied powers.
The Heroes' Monument of the Red Army in Vienna was built to commemorate 17,000 Soviet soldiers who fell in the Battle for Vienna of World War II.
When Austria was given self-rule in 1955 the government was required to agree to maintain the unpopular monument, which has caused controversy ever since.
