Before they built it an estimated 50 people died every month as they attempted to walk across the highway (aka BR-101). Local average car speed never surpasses 100km/h. In one instance I recall watching a lady in a Fiat Palio car hit some five to six unsuspecting street crossers all of them at once against the guardrail in the median strip. All of them survived it, including the distraught lady driver.
