One of the oldest city of Orissa.It was the capital of Orissa(Utkala) during the reign of Keshari Dynasty (12-13th. century AD).The town is names after Jajati Keshari the tallest king of this dynasty.He is believed to perform a grand hindu ritual here at Dahaswa-medha-ghata on the bank of river Baitarani, a sacred river considered by Hindus.Besides this place is famous for Biraja temple an incarnation of godess Durga hence a tourist destination. It has one of the four "Nabhigaya",believed to be one of the 4 places that a Hindu should visit to complete its offering towards its ancestors for the peace of their souls.The city has now been converted into a district,It has been seat of learning in Orissa has a high school about 150 years old and a court
