In November 200, the Valparaiso Court of Appeals dismissed the appeal by the owners of the Hotel Hanga Roa, occupied by indigenous Hito clan, protesters evicted from their premises, decided that there were illegal. Hito clan refers to the claim that the property is ancestral heritage. But the second December, the court issued an order which gives 24 hours activists occupied the vacated space. About 6 o'clock the third December (ie, less than 24 hours later), a group of about 30 policemen armed with batons and shotguns woke from sleep seven members of the Tuko Tuki clan, and forcibly drove them out. This act sparked peaceful protests that were brutally suppressed by the police.
"This is the first time a smoldering conflict between Rapa Nui activists and local authorities ends with bloodshed." Some of the leaders of Rapa Nui are frustrated, have a fear of what will happen next. After all, what can activists armed with sticks do against riot police armed with guns? Governor of Valparaiso, Raul Celis, came to the island on Sunday after violence, but did not speak with any representatives of the people of Rapa Nui. There is absolutely no effort on the part of public authorities to enter into dialogue to resolve the issue peacefully. Private investors, developers and local authorities are determined to retain control of the island, because of its strategic location in the Pacific Ocean (Chile has a new business plan built ports and one airport), tourist attractions, but the natives called this development can not be used.
For now, Rapa Nui still occupies 12 sites around the island, but Sunday was a military plane carrying police reinforcements sent from the Chilean mainland. Celis governor warned that all other inhabited localities are displaced by violence.
