The site was identified as a location for aluminium works in support of the WWII war effort It was opened in 1944 by Sir Stafford Cripps. Under MOD ownership..later soon after the end of WWII the Site formed along with other locations (namely Foyers, Kinlochleven, and later Fort William,)as part of the British Aluminium Co. Ltd.
In its early days produced Duralumin and like aircraft alloys for the spitfire, hurricane and other craft. At its peak in 1950's employed 4,500 people, and in 1990's over 65,000 tonnes of rolled Aluminium. Processes included DC casting, Hot Rolling, furnace treatments of annealing temper/stress relieving, salt bath heat treatment and artificial ageing, Cold rolling, Chemical bath Alochroming, Painting and Roll forming.
Failing against excess European capacity and pricing, it closed in 2004 when it was Owned by Novelis a spin off from the Global Alcan Co.
