Cadbury/Neilson Chocolate Factory

Canada / Ontario / Toronto / Gladstone Avenue, 277
 factory, food industry

A chocolate factory, now owned by Cadbury (originally operated under the Neilson brand) located in the heart of Toronto. At five stories high it houses 433,373 square feet of floor space and operates to this day.

The first Gladstone structure was a comfortable three-storey brick house and a small factory for the company's 25 employees. In 1910 a two-story factory was constructed next to the original building. It was raised to five stories in 1912. By 1919 a second building was added and linked to the first by a second floor walkway. The main entrance to the offices, with the large brass double doors, is essentially unchanged from that time. The factory continues to be in full operation, blanketing the surrounding neighborhoods with a lovely aroma of chocolate on any given evening all year long.

  • Nestle not Cadbury
  • I had a student summer job here in 1978! I stood at the end of a Granola conveyor belt for two weeks stuffing the fresh granola into a press before cutting into bars. At that point I was able to withstand EXTREME boredom - the smell of the fresh granola did help, though. The primary purpose of my job was in packaging the Halloween packs. I would place trays of candy bars onto a table from which the ladies would take them and place them neatly on a conveyor belt which delivered the assortment of bars to a wrapping machine. I recall the wrapping machines frequently breaking down. The ladies on the line were good fun and hard-working, though unfairly underpaid compared with the men. Perhaps most were Portuguese? Not sure. We men all wore white and white helmets, the ladies wore hair nets and white coats. I recall I fancied a Ukrainian girl who tragically didn't want to know me. Alas! And yes, the smell was fabulous - the girl and the chocolate! LOL!
