Waziristan Haveli (Osama bin Laden's hideout compound) (Abbottabad)

Pakistan / North-West Frontier / Abottabad / Abbottabad
historical layer / disappeared object  Add category

This was the site of the residence and compound of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Built in 2005, the three-story mansion was roughly eight times the size of nearby houses and was surrounded by a 12 to 18 foot high wall topped with barbed wire. It had no internet and phone service connections. It was located by intelligence agencies in August 2010.

On May 2nd, 2011, a helicopter-based raid was carried out at the compound by U.S. Navy SEALS which resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden and several other occupants of the compound. After confirming his identity, bin Laden's body was removed from the area and subsequently buried at sea.

The compound was demolished on 26th February, 2012 by Pakistani security forces.

  • This site area is only 13000Sqft, also shadow of boundary wall is not half big ( considering 15 ft boundary wall) as of 3 story building.
  • According to <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/05/02/world/asia/abbottabad-map-of-where-osama-bin-laden-was-killed.html?ref=asia">a map</a> from the New York Times, this is the correct location.
  • Confirmed

  • Missing the sides of the compound in the current outline.
  • looks confirmed http://photoblog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/05/02/6569239-osama-bin-ladens-hideout-revealed?gt1=43001
  • Please refrain from making pointless edits. Adding "Pakistan" to a tag obviously located in Pakistan is unnecessary and bordering on ridiculous...
  • Agreed with RK77...we also don't need the words "laden" and "osama" as categories...categories should only be directly relevant words to the object...people will find it doing a normal search using his name!
  • Google earth also has a historical flashback map of this area in 2001...this compound is NOT there...gee, how'd we miss that?
  • This is just a map marking (reference) and should not be cluttered with sentimental comments.
  • I'm being serious now. Please keep non-neutral comments to yourselves. This is Wikimapia not a Facebook profile so keep biased opinions away from here. If there is evidence of persistent unnecessary editing, account limitations may ensue.
  • This is Wiki-MAP-ia not a political battleground drawing upon half-truths.
  • The area is nearly 2 acres..the back wall is nearly 400 ft., for 6 years locals didn't know?

  • NOTICE: This place tag has been subject to many pointless edits. It will be watched now by level 2 users. If a user tries to vandalize this tag again (for example, editing the title or the description), he will be BANNED immediately. If a user tries to make an unnecessary change (an edit that doesn't add anything aside from his name at the bottom), he will be LIMITED.
  • This fixer upper is currently listed by Century 21 for $1.2 million.
  • I edited the polygon outline as per the included image 3D model
  • @topk - In some places of this world it is very healthy to NOT know some things!
  • Why is the building box being checked time & again? The boundary & description defines a compound and not the building/mansion that is within the boundary.
  • Added official title of the compound 'Waziristan Haveli'. Please check Wikipedia page and referenced BBC News page.
  • Agreed. Users, this tag is NOT a building. Please refrain from checking the box, even in language entries. If you check the box in one language entry, it applies to all entries!
  • For those uninitiated, 'Waziristan Haveli' does not translate to 'Osama bin Laden Compound'. It is merely a building title with the latter label 'Haveli' meaning 'mansion'. Titles like Haveli, Manzil, Niwas, Sadan etc. are common in Pakistan and the Indian subcontinent.
  • defensive wise this compound is oddly shapped and would seem hard to defend as proven by the seals....
  • I have seen this building and found no any discrepancy regarding unusual structure of building!!!!!
  • this would be the yard area itself...it is split in two and angled as a triangle....on side of the yard is not visable to the other...the unusal stucture is the compound itself.... .not the house
  • the compound not the building is oddly constructed

  • The compound is being demolished on this day by the Pakistani Government. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/26/world/asia/pakistan-razing-house-where-bin-laden-lived.html?hp
  • Destroyed by government forces 26 Feb, 2012
