Located in northestern Lithuania, covers area of 911 km², borders with Latvia. Divided into 9 elderships. Administraive centre - Skuodas.
Municipality is known for boulders. The biggest rock in Lithuania is located in Balstyčiai, Rock museum was established in Mosėdis. Coniferious forest dominates in municipality,sometimes it is described as taiga. Part of municipality is preserved by Žemaitija National Park and Salantai Regional park. Many archeologic heritage remained, most of mounds appeared during the fights with vikings. The longest rivers are Baruva and Šventoji.
