Burlington slate shaft


This is the shaft leading from the quarry, into the underground quarries at Burlington. The shaft used to be cadged until the quarry abandoned it's internal tramways and inclined plain. The incline plain at burlington can now be walked up to gain Kirkby Moor.

Shaft would have gon to chamber below, no cage. water balance shafts had cages though.

what on earth is this... the thing so annoyingly marked as a shaft is in fact just a pit... it was a shaft once, but now just a open pit...
