Vaikam is situated on the North-Western side of Kottayam district and shares its border with Vembanattu Kayal (lake). It is the oldest township in Keralam - nay in India. Vaikam is (in)famous in Indian history due to the 'Vaikam Satyagraham' against untouchability, in which Mahatma Gandhi and Periyar Ramasami participated. It is easily accessible from Eranakulam, Alappuzha and Kottayam. Mahadeva temple, also known as Thekkan Kashi (Southern Varanasi), is situated here and is famous for Ashtami (Vaikathashtami). Vaikam has lots of backwaters and greenery and has a high potential for tourism. The people living here comprise a mixture of Hindus,Muslims and Christians .

Vaikam is a pilgrimage center.

The best time to visit Vaikam is during the months of Nov-Dec during the Ashtami festival.

A great Sanskrit Scholar Sri. Vatakkumkoor Rajaraja Varma Raja lived here. He was a diciple of Great Poet Sri Uloor S Parameswara Iyer. He was hourned by the title " Kavithilakan" by Travancore Maharaja. His Most Famous work was " KERALIYA SAMSKRITHA SAHITHYA CHARITHRAM". he has written so many other books like UTHARA BHARATHAM, RAGHAVABHYUDAYAM and KERALA SAHITHYA CHARITHRATHINTE CHARCHAYUM POORANAVUM 2parts. He was a member of Kerala Sahithya Acadamy.
Malayalam auther Vikam Muhammad Basheer and film actor Mammutty hail from vaikom.

Here is the world known Siva Temple Situated, Its very lovely place. And this temple known for annadaanam at every day. And its one of a powerfull Shiva temple in kerala. And i living just 17 km east form this place.
Vaikam is a place which is very famous due to so many things. Vaikom sathyagraha is popular with the presence of mahatma gandhi,lead by C.Kesavan,Vaikam Sukumaran Nair,Vaikam Muhammed Basheer (literature), were basically from Vaikom. The great poet pala narayanan nair lived in Vaikam.
Even the place is very famous and situated on the bank of Vembanattu Kayal, the development in the twon is very slow. Also so may knwon personalities from this place and ministers from this place. Now everybody can calculate the things.

E.V.Ramaswamy Naikar, a civil rights leader from Madras is also well known for his participation and leadership. His mimory is enshrined in a Statue and Mandapam at the Vaikom Main junction installed by the Government of Madras. Also known for their leadership and support for the Satyagraha are Christian leader George Joseph and local Muslims suppoting the cause of lower caste Hindus who demanded their right to worship in their local temples
