mining, ghost town

Phoenix was a very busy town in the early 1900s, with several rich copper-gold mines in the area. When the price of copper plunged after World War 1, the mines suddenly closed, and people simply walked away leaving everything behind. It was a fascinating ghost town for many many years. The mining company returned in the late 1950s, and its open pit mine (which operated until 1978) unfortunately destroyed what was left of the town site. All that remains is the cemetery and the cenotaph.
