Orphanage. 1847-9, by John Foster and Son of Bristol, for George Muller. Allen House was the first of five large barrack-type orphanage buildings to be built from 1847 to 1870 by the Prussian-born pastor and philanthropist George Muller. The orphanage was built entirely from voluntary contributions. Allen House was illustrated in the London Illustrated News in 1850.
Orphan Houses 2, 4 and 5 are now (2010) owned by the City of Bristol College, while No 3 House (in which Müller lived for the last few years of his life and in which he died), on the other side of Ashley Down Road was converted into private flats in 2007. No 1 House has been redeveloped as flats
