Former West Park Hospital

United Kingdom / England / Epsom and Ewell /
hospital, historical layer / disappeared object

One of the 'Epsom cluster' of mental hospitals built by the London County Council in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The others where Horton Hospital, Long Grove Hospital and the Manor Hospital. This was the bigest concentration of psychiatric patients anywhere in the world.

West Park was opened in 1921 in buildings designed by W. Clifford-Smith. It had largely closed by 2003 although small number of wards and villas remain open.

As of summer 2011 demolition work is taking place in preparation for a new development of houses and apartments to be known as Noble Park. Some ward buildings, administration and the water tower are to be retained.

  • Try the 'Index of Lunatic Asylums and Mental Hospitals' web site for further information
  • What is this place now?
  • Seems as though Broadway Malyan are redeveloping all 5 sites of the "Epsom Cluster" and turning them into Mixed residential and comercial estates. The cluster covered 250 hectares of greenbelt area. Couldnt the NHS have put the land to better use? Right now, whats on this site is probably houses and what not.
  • nope its still empty waiting to be turned into flats :(
  • Demolition here is now well underway. I've requested that some of the buildings tagged be deleted to reflect the current layout of the site.
