On these three corners stand carved rusticated sandstone posts twelve feet high, five feet to a side. The stone pylons were relocated here from their original site on the Capitol grounds where they supported a sturdy decorative fence which was meant originally to keep cattle (which freely pastured the city's green spaces in the early 19th century) from wandering too close to the lawmakers' building. Architect Charles Bulfinch, designer of the early US Capitol rotunda and dome, designed these posts.
