office building, commercial building
14-story office building completed in 1947. Designed by Halsey, McCormack & Helmer, it was originally the Greenwich Savings Bank Building. It is clad in limestone, slightly lighter in shade at the 3-story base, with the ground floor clad in grey-brown granite. There is a double-height opening at the center, with a curved granite molding and glass infill, including glass doors at the ground level. The ends of the ground floor have entrances with glass double-doors, slightly recessed between the curved ends of the granite walls. Above these are small, square windows at the 2nd floor, with projecting flagpoles mounted below them. The interior was clad with wooden paneling and featured murals by Julien Binford in 1949.
The upper floors have five bays of single-windows, with the end bays spaced slightly farther apart. The base is capped at the 3rd floor by a band course with alternating roundels and bands of vertical grooves, topped by a cornice. Above the base there are vertical grooves on the piers between the three middle bays of windows at each floor, and horizontal string courses organize the facade into 2-story groups. On the three middle spandrels between the 10th & 11th floors there are simple stone medallions.
The end bays set back above the 11th floor, and the middle bays set back above the 12th, beginning a small series of cascading setbacks to the roof. The ground floor is occupied by Cavalier Galleries.
