As part of the nature theme at the Mount Taesong grounds, is the Pyongyang Central Zoo which holds 600 species of animals. Some of the animals at the Central Zoo were state gifts to the late DPRK President Kim il Sung. In 2008 the Central Zoo underwent a renovation and expansion. General Kim Jong il visited the renovated zoo in December 2008.
