The former St. Nicholas Church is a ruin and a memorial against war. It was one of the five main churches in Hamburg before it was destroyed in an air raid during World War II in 1943. In 1951, all of the ruins except the tower were cleared. The tower is the third highest church tower in Germany and the fifth highest in the world.
