Siphon for Catskill Aqueduct (Part of NYC Water Supply System) (Pleasantville, New York)

This small brick building, and the similar one about 1000 feet to the northwest, are the endpoints of a siphon across the valley in between. The aqueduct is a covered canal (in other words, is not under pressure) for most of its length, but where it crosses a lower valley, such as here, the water is under pressure because it flows down one side of the valley and up the other side. While most of the aqueduct is masonry, where inverted siphons such as this occur, steel pipes are used to withstand the pressure. These two buildings are the end points of the steel pipe. (There are many such siphons; this is just one.)
