The Saint. Lebuinus Church (known commonly as the "big church" or "great church") has been since the Middle Ages the main church of Deventer. It was for a brief time the cathedral of the short-lived Roman Catholic Diocese of Deventer (1559-1591). It was taken by the Calvinists in the Protestant Revolution. Today it still serves as a Protestant church.
The present structure was built mostly in Late-Gothic "hall church" style between 1450 and 1525, on the foundations of an 11th-century Romanesque basilica of which certain elements (particularly in the crypt) can still be seen. The tower dates from the end of the 16th century, and in the 17th century was provided with a cupola housing a carillon.
