Rodman Shore Gun (Santa Monica, California)

USA / California / Santa Monica / Santa Monica, California
 cannon, artillery battery

Eight inch bore, calibre 12 (approximate).
Cast at the West Point Foundry, probably in 1861. Proof marks on the muzzle indicate it was modified in 1886, possibly a reconfiguration to a rifled bore by sleeving down from an original 10 inch smooth bore.
This gun never saw active duty in Southern California. City records indicate the Department of War transferred the gun from the Angel Island (San Francisco) shore battery to Santa Monica for the 1908 4th of July celebrations in what was then called Linda Vista Park.
