Saint Peter Street is one of the oldest streets in Marlow and still has many of the old cottages, although all but one of the numerous inns and alehouses have now disappeared.
On the river bank at this point stood a large winch which was used for hauling barges upstream through the flash lock. The weir was designed to hold back water for mills and the lock was highly dangerous for navigation, involving as it did a sharp turn under the bridge, and many accidents, some fatal, have been recorded. The present weir is approximately on the same site.
