Arlington House. Antebellum plantation house that was home to Martha Washington's grandson, George Washington Parke Custis, and, later, to Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The U.S. government confiscated the plantation and house during the Civil War for nonpayment of taxes that Lee's wife (GWP Custis' daughter and heir) allegedly owed after the government had prevented her from paying the taxes. The government then converted the plantation into a military cemetery to prevent Lee from using the property after the war. Several decades after the war ended, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the government's seizure had been unconsitutional. The government then purchased the property and the cemetery from Lee's son, former Confederate General Custis Lee.
