Basilica of the Holy Face (Manoppello)

Italy / Abruzzo / Manoppello
 church, basilica, interesting place

The Capuchin monastery in Manoppello was founded, according to tradition, in 1620. The church has undergone radical changes from the original. Initially there was a church dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, which was enlarged both in 1848 and during the renovation of 1960-1965. The built of the structure is closely tied to the story of the relic of the Holy Face, a thin veil that portrays the image of a man's face with long hair and irregular beard. According to tradition the image is that of Christ.
